Maryland: Workshops with Incarcerated Youth & Adults

student’s work: poetry and painting project, Baltimore
In 2011-12, Joel led five series of art workshops in juvenile detention centers, adult jails, and in a center for court-involved youth through the Class Acts Arts organization in Maryland. These projects give participants the opportunity to learn skills, collaborate with their peers, and focus their energy on positive creative activities. They created their own personal works of art as well as collaborative murals. While working with this population can be challenging, Joel finds it very rewarding and calls upon his many years of experience as a counselor for teenagers with difficult life situations, including sexual abuse, extreme violence, drugs and suicide.
